Michael Forman Memorial Fund

The Jewish Community Foundation of the West is pleased to partner with the family of Michael Forman to honor his memory through scholarships to Camp Winthers, a music camp run by the San Juan Unified School District.

Michael Forman found some of the greater pleasures in his life as a teacher and a musician. He came to teaching late in his life but he made music for almost all of it. His talents were far greater than he would ever acknowledge but that making music fed his soul, he would never deny. He played guitar and harmonica, mostly, but could also be a one man band with drums and keyboard as well. That his family has chosen to honor his memory with this music scholarship would have pleased him.

Michael taught Writing, History, and Philosophy. His favorite class to teach was Ethics and every time he taught it he would have students read Peter Singer’s essay, “The Singer Solution to World Poverty”. This essay raises some very difficult questions which demand that we consider how much each of us should do, can each of us do to address the issue of global poverty. Michael would also be pleased that we have chosen a written response to this essay as part of the application process for this scholarship. More information regarding the application for this scholarship will be posted to this site as it becomes available.

Teen Trips to Israel

One of the most important Jewish experiences a teen can have is to visit Israel with a group of peers. After seeing the impact that such a trip had on their own children, Sharon and Larry Saltzman wanted to make sure that every teen had the chance to go. By working with the Jewish Community Foundation of the West, they established the Teen Trips to Israel Fund. Every year, this fund contributes money to the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region to distribute as scholarship money for trips to Israel.

This important cause allows teens an opportunity they otherwise might not have had. As the cost of these trips rise and resources have become more scarce, Sharon and Larry feel it is important to grow this fund so future generations can connect with Israel, the Jewish people, and their own sense of Jewish identity.

Adult B'nai Mitzvah Project

The 2011 Mosaic Law Adult B'nai Mitzvah Class is working with WEAVE to create an opportunity for our community to assist with the important work being done in our area. WEAVE's Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) accompanies every victim who reports a rape in Sacramento County to the hospital. Advocates respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They remain with the sexual assault victim until the evidentiary exam is complete, no matter how long it takes.

The class is collecting donations of new clothing for the victims to wear home from the hospital and cash donations in support of this program.
